Hydro Rein powers over 20 percent of Brazil's renewable energy growth in 2024

In 2024, Hydro Rein contributed 2.3 gigawatts (GW) of new renewable capacity to Brazil's national grid, more than 20 percent of the country's total renewable additions, according to data from ANEEL (Agência Nacional de Energia Elétrica).

This achievement aligns with Hydro Rein's mission of enabling industries to transition to clean, affordable, and sustainable energy, while helping reduce carbon emissions across entire value chains.

Four major projects co-owned by Hydro Rein came online in 2024:

  • Mendubim solar complex (Rio Grande do Norte), with Scatec and Equinor
  • Boa Sorte solar complex (Minas Gerais), with Atlas Renewable Energy
  • Vista Alegre solar complex (Minas Gerais), with Atlas Renewable Energy
  • Ventos de São Zacarias wind complex (Piauí-Pernambuco border), with Macquarie Asset Management

Driving Brazil's energy transition

Hydro Rein's portfolio in Brazil demonstrates its role as a leading developer of solar and wind projects through strong partnerships. In total, Brazil connected close to 10 GW of renewable capacity in 2024. By supplying 2.3 GW of new renewable energy capacity, Hydro Rein and partners were responsible for over 20 percent of the total renewable capacity additions in the country.

"Our achievements in Brazil reflect Hydro Rein's dedication to becoming a market-leading provider of renewable energy solutions for industry," said Marcela Jacobs, Head of Hydro Rein Brazil. "By adding 2.3 GW to the grid in 2024, we are proving how strategic partnerships and long-term investments can enable sustainable industrial growth, create local value, and accelerate the fight against climate change."

Reinforcing Hydro's legacy

Hydro Rein's differentiator lies in combining Hydro's century-long industrial expertise with a sharp focus on sustainability and responsibility. By cleaning up the energy matrix of Hydro's operations and providing renewable solutions to external customers, Hydro Rein is not only decarbonizing its own value chain but also supporting Brazil's broader energy transition.

As Brazil continues to emerge as a global leader in renewable energy deployment, Hydro Rein's contribution highlights the company's essential role in shaping a low-carbon future while aligning with its shareholder Hydro's overarching ambition of net-zero carbon aluminum production.
