Hydro Rein celebrates the inauguration of Ventos de São Zacarias wind power complex in Brazil

Hydro Rein and its partners this week inaugurated Ventos de São Zacarias wind power complex, marking the completion of one of the company's largest renewable energy investments to date.

12 June, 2025

Located in the states of Piauí and Pernambuco in northeast Brazil, the 456 MW facility reinforces Hydro Rein's long-term commitment to accelerating the energy transition both in Brazil and globally.

Developed in partnership with Macquarie Asset Management, and backed by long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) with Hydro's alumina refinery and mining operations in Brazil, the wind complex comprises 80 turbines and is expected to generate approximately 2 TWh of renewable electricity annually.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by more than 100 guests, including Governor Rafael Fonteles of Piauí and Mayor Magno Dantas of Simões. The celebration featured cultural performances by a local dance group and traditional foods from the region, highlighting the project's deep ties to the surrounding communities.

"This is a proud day for Hydro Rein, our partners, and the communities of Araripina and Simões," said Olivier Girardot, CEO of Hydro Rein. "The inauguration of Ventos de São Zacarias is a powerful example of what long-term industrial vision and strong collaboration can achieve. By delivering clean, competitive energy to Hydro's operations, we are contributing to the decarbonization of one of the world's most energy-intensive industries and helping to secure Brazil's sustainable energy future."

The inauguration brought together project partners, government leaders, community representatives, and employees to celebrate a major milestone in Brazil's clean energy journey and to reaffirm the shared commitment to inclusive and sustainable development.

The complex is owned by Hydro Rein, Macquarie Asset Management, Mineração Paragominas, and Alunorte, and was developed and is operated by the joint venture company Ventos de São Zacarias.

Beyond its contribution to Brazil's renewable energy capacity, the project includes a broad range of social and environmental initiatives. Hydro Rein has planted over 20,000 native trees, upgraded local infrastructure, and invested in education and skills training programs in close collaboration with local communities. These efforts, initiated during the development and construction phases, will continue into the operational phase to ensure long-term, positive impact.

Hydro Rein is actively expanding its renewable energy portfolio in Brazil and the Nordics, with over 60 projects under development. The company focuses on wind, solar, battery storage, and onsite energy solutions to support energy-intensive industries in their decarbonization journey.
